Curtailing Diversion and Abuse of Opioid Analgesics without Jeopardizing Pain Treatment

  • A commentary by Nora Volkow, Director of National Institute on Drug Abuse, and Thomas McLellan, the former Deputy Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, was recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.  The commentary highlights the increasing public health problems associated with prescription opioid analgesics, but also recognizes that they are the most effective medications for the management of pain. Suggestions are provided for improving the management of noncancer pain in primary care, which would also serve to descrease the liklihood of diversion, abuse, and overdose of opioid medications.
